About Institute Fellowships

All tenured and tenure-track Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences faculty members working in the humanities, including humanistic branches of the social sciences, and all tenured and tenure-track School of Communication and School of Music faculty members working in the humanities are eligible to become Institute Fellows.  Eligible faculty members may apply either for a full year of supported leave OR a 50% teaching reduction.

Applicants in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences must receive the approval of the Chair of their Department before applying. Applicants in the School of Music and the School of Communications must receive the approval of their Dean and the Chair of their Department before applying.

Institute Fellows are expected:

1. To attend and participate in Institute events.

2. To present a talk based upon their Institute-supported research at a mid-day Lunch Colloquium sometime during the year. The presentation will be about 20 minutes in length followed by a 30 minute discussion with the group of Institute Associates and other colleagues the Fellow may invite.

3. To demonstrate that the research leave in the Kaplan Institute has had or will have a demonstrable impact on their undergraduate teaching.  There are two ways to fulfill this obligation:

Option A. Fellows will offer, normally during the year immediately following the fellowship year, a new, one-quarter undergraduate course in the humanities (listed as an Institute course) reflecting research undertaken during the fellowship year. (The course can be co-listed in the Fellow's home department and can be open to department majors and others as the department and professor see fit).  This course becomes part of the group of courses offered to undergraduates by the Institute and as such it should exemplify the Institute's interdisciplinary agenda and commitment to new scholarship in the humanities.

Option B.  Fellows will revamp an intermediate course in their own department or program converting it into a more self-consciously interdisciplinary course inflected by the research pursued during the Kaplan Institute Fellowships. The revised course syllabus, and a narrative “post-mortem” after the revised course has been taught must be submitted to the Institute Director. If appropriate, the duly revised course may be co-listed as a Humanities course.

A panel of three external senior humanist Scholars unaffiliated with Northwestern University review the applications and select the fellows.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch with Director S. Hollis Clayson (shc@northwestern.edu), if you have any questions about the procedures or schedule of application.

About Institute Affiliates

The position of Faculty Affiliate is open to all faculty members working in the humanities within the university, who would be particularly interested in conversations with other humanities scholars. (Faculty Affiliate should not be confused with an Institute Fellowship, currently open only to WCAS, School of Communication, and School of Music tenured and tenure-track faculty.) We also invite applications for Graduate Affiliates—advanced doctoral students working in the humanities in any of the schools across the entire university—who would be interested in sharing their ideas and research with Institute associates and participating in events with our visitors. Annual Institute Affiliates receive a designated research account of $1,000 (some important restrictions apply) and are expected to take an active part in all major Institute activities during the academic year of their affiliation.

Affiliates have lunch and participate in workshops with our speakers, and participate in Institute Lunch Colloquia (usually on Wednesdays at noon) -- events which provide opportunities for dialogue with other humanities faculty and graduate students.

Please do not hesitate to contact Beverly Zeldin-Palmer, Department Assistant, Kaplan Institute for the Humanities b-zeldin@northwestern.edu (or 847-467-3970), if you have any questions about the procedures or schedule of application.
