Faculty
The Institute offers faculty a wide range of events across the humanities including visiting speakers' public lectures; Lunch Colloquia on myriad topics led by Humanities Associates and visitors; occasional Institute-initiated major conferences, like the 2005 "Theology, Faith and Politics"; and Research Workshops. It also co-sponsors numerous lectures, colloquia, performances, and conferences. These events prompt interdisciplinary conversation among faculty in a variety of fields and departments across the university.
Each year we offer Fellowships (usually four or five) to tenure-track and tenured faculty in WCAS, School of Communication, and School of Music to pursue their own research, after which they teach a class to upperclassmen. Fellows conduct an Institute Lunch Colloquium on their current research. Faculty at all levels from across NU are invited to become Institute Affiliates, who form part of the Institute community and actively participate in Institute events.
In the realm of community outreach, the Institute invites faculty to conduct our annual Classics in Context seminar (organized by each of the area humanities centers and institutes under the aegis of the Chicago Humanities Festival). At NU this is a one-day Saturday seminar in May for about 40 Chicagoland teachers on a specific important text suitable for classroom teaching.
The Institute also provides a stipend to WCAS faculty who volunteer to teach in the Odyssey Project, an eight-month college-level course in the humanities for low-income adults sponsored by the Illinois Humanities Council. The Odyssey Project is part of the nation-wide Clemente Project. For more information, call the Illinois Humanities Council at (312) 422-5580 and ask for Amy Thomas Elder, the Illinois Odyssey Project Director.
The Institute also collaborates with the Evanston Public Library to present the Evanston Northwestern Humanities Lecture Series. Hosted by the Evanston Public Library, these are free public lectures given by Northwestern scholars.
Faculty should also note that we collect and post information about other humanities institutions' grants, fellowships, searches, events, and so forth, in the Institute at 2010 Sheridan Road.
