Mentoring

You may be asked or wish to become a faculty mentor to an Institute for the Humanities intern. The Institute internship program places undergraduates in Chicago area humanities, arts, and cultural institutions, thus enabling them to gain valuable, hands-on experience in arts management and to devise and carry out an academic project focused on research using the resources of the host institution.

Typically HUM 390-0 Humanities Internship lasts one quarter, carries one credit, and consists of two parts--the job (about 10 hours of work per week during one quarter in the host institution) and the research component overseen by the faculty mentor. The faculty mentor assigns a reading list and writing or other assignments and supervises the main research project. The intern needs to keep a job journal (field notes) of work at the host institution. The main project will normally be a 20+ pp. research paper on a well-defined scholarly topic stemming from the internship, but less conventional forms (such as a website, a series of interviews, or a video) are acceptable, if approved by the faculty mentor and the Institute. This is very much like an independent study. We ask that you meet with the student, read the job journal, supervise and grade the research project.
