Patrick Killoran
"Fata Morgana"
Patrick Killoran’s work is sited in the products of consumer culture, such as vending machines and automobiles. His work assumes that most of these products and devices would not exist if it were not for capitalism. For him, these products have come to dominate public life. Unlike painting or sculpture that predate these systems and economies, he is interested in exploring how art exists in these new systems that subsume our lives. As the artist in residence, he will focus on the legacy of luxury real-estate advertising. Many of these luxury developments evoke images and lifestyles that often represent unrealistic or contradictory aspirations. His project Fata Morgana will be a fictional real estate development. This fantasy architecture will describe totalizing space that leaves its residents no reason to go anywhere else.
Fall 2009
Valentina Fratti
"Landfill"
As seen on TV … Everything to make your days easier from Tupperware you can’t live without to gadget that will save your life. Do they actually work? Do we actually need them? Why do we compulsively buy these products and of course, where does all that ugly plastic end up? Landfill is an interdisciplinary event that includes an installation of some of the wilder items one can order from television paid programming or from those ubiquitous catalogs. Inspired by the classic medicine shows, this live piece that includes, a mentalist, a magician, comedy, music and a special guest appearance, will leave you wanting to get your very own bottle of a magical elixir presented to the public for the very first time.
