Undergraduate Project Award

The Kaplan Institute's Annual Humanities Project Competition!

Application deadline: April 13, 2018

The Kaplan Humanities Institute will award prizes for the most outstanding essays, research papers, and/or projects produced in Humanities Institute courses from spring 2017-winter 2018. The prizes are accompanied by cash awards of $400. Winners will be invited to the Kaplan Institute year-end reception to receive their awards and will have their essays/project links posted on the Kaplan Institute website. We encourage undergraduates from every department and school within Northwestern to compete!

Students may submit any paper, essay, or project produced within a course sponsored or co-listed in the Humanities Institute in Spring 2017, Fall 2017, or Winter 2018. Submissions will be judged anonymously by a committee within the Humanities Institute. Applications are submitted via on online portal; see instructions and links below.

How to submit a paper for the WRITING PRIZE

  1. Please prepare PDF files in advance of proceeding to the application portal. All required fields must be filled in before you click on the "Submit Application" button. The system will not accept incomplete applications, and partial applications cannot be saved and resumed at a later time. 
  2. In the application portal, please complete OFFICIAL CONTACT INFORMATION and ACADEMIC INFORMATION sections. For Highest Degree Granting Institution, please put: Northwestern University. For Highest Degree Type, please select: Other. 
  3. APPLICATION DOCUMENTS section. In the "Cover letter" and "Additional Materials" fields, please upload documents as PDFs. No document may exceed 2MB in size. File names should not contain parentheses, quotation marks, or other such characters.
    1. Cover letter: Upload a cover sheet with your: 1) name, 2) school, 3) year in school, 4) major/minor, 5) phone number, 6) email address, 7) mailing address, 8) the title of your paper, 9) the name of the course, and 10) the instructor's name.
    2. Additional Materials: Upload the essay or research paper you have chosen to submit for the contest. All comments by teachers should be removed or the manuscript retyped. A legible (high res) scan is acceptable; handwritten work is not acceptable.
